A trustee is an entity or individual responsible for managing a trustor’s assets; the responsibilities of a trustee include filing taxes, distributing trust assets, and storing the assets until a distribution.

A trustee controls property stored in a trust or retirement account and distributes the property to the account beneficiary based on the terms established by the trustor.

Trusts are created by an individual and their lawyers, who decide how to transfer designated assets to trustees. These trustees hold on to the assets for the beneficiaries of the trust.
