Cost Basis Accounting
Tax lots are the shares purchased in a single transaction. Separately purchased shares of the same asset are considered unique tax lots. When a tax lot is sold, accountants track the sale price of each tax lot individually, so each tax lot has its own cost basis and identifying date of purchase and sale. Tracking tax lots allows investors to make informed decisions about which lots to sell at what time and price.
