Shamir Backup

1 min read

The Shamir Backup is a security standard that divides a seed phrase into several parts to enhance security. Named after cryptographer Adi Shamir, this technique ensures that the original seed phrase can only be reconstructed when a specified number of parts, or shares, are combined. Each individual share is useless on its own, meaning that access to the complete seed phrase requires multiple shares.

This method is particularly valuable for protecting bitcoin, as it keeps the seed phrase secure even if parts are lost or compromised. The Shamir backup effectively reduces the risks associated with traditional single-seed backups by addressing both the risk of theft and the risk of loss, thereby enhancing overall security for your bitcoin.
