How do I set up multi-factor authentication (MFA)?

In line with our security philosophy, we have required our clients to use multi-factor authentication from the moment they create their account. River currently provides two methods of multi-factor authentication to secure your account: TOTP and SMS.

Time-based One-time Password (Recommended)

Time-based One-time Password (“TOTP”) multi-factor authentication adds another layer of protection to your River account. Google Authenticator or similar authenticator apps provide a very secure configuration for 2FA. These do not require phone reception or internet access once set up.

To enable TOTP, login to your River account and navigate to the Settings page.

Under the Multi-Factor Authentication section, click “Activate” to enable TOTP for your account.

You will be sent a PIN via text message (SMS) to the mobile phone number associated with your River account. When prompted, enter the PIN on the screen to verify the TOTP activation request.

Scan the QR code with your TOTP app of choice and enter the one-time password. We recommend using Google Authenticator.

You're all set!

SMS/Text

SMS/text message multi-factor authentication will be enabled in your River account by default. You can make verify that SMS authentication is enabled on your account by navigating to the Settings page.

Under the Multi-Factor Authentication section on the Settings page, you will see a checkmark for SMS, indicating that SMS authentication is enabled for your account.
