How do I create a Hardware Wallet account?

Overview

This is currently a beta feature. Please contact support@river.com for access.

The River Hardware Wallet account is an extension of your Trezor Hardware Wallet or Ledger Hardware Wallet. By connecting your hardware wallet to River, you will be able to view your hardware wallet balance on River, track your investments with our performance tools, and generate deposit addresses – without having to connect the hardware wallet to your laptop.

We currently support two hardware wallet providers for River’s Hardware Wallet account type:

  1. Ledger
    • Ledger Nano X
    • Ledger Nano S
  2. Trezor
    • Trezor One
    • Trezor Model T

It is important to note that with this account type, you are responsible for the security of your own funds. River does not have possession of the Bitcoin nor do we have the ability to spend your Bitcoin. We merely have view-only access into your hardware wallet.

This is done by exporting your xpub. For Ledger hardware wallets, the xpub is associated with your Bitcoin Native Segwit wallet for account #1. For Trezor hardware wallets, the xpub is associated with your Bitcoin Nested Segwit wallet for account #1.

Ledger

1. Log into your River account and click Open New Account.

2. Select to open a Hardware Wallet account.

3. Select Ledger.

4. Connect the Ledger to your device, unlock your Ledger using your PIN, then open the Bitcoin App on the Ledger device. Once these steps are complete, click “Next”.

5. You will be prompted to sign a message and export your public key using your Ledger. Please accept these two requests on your Ledger device.

6. Once you have successfully signed a message, name your Account and click “Next”.

7. Congratulations, you have successfully connected your Ledger Hardware Wallet to River! You can click “Done” to go back to the River web application.

Trezor

In order to link your Trezor Hardware Wallet to River, you will need to download Trezor Bridge installed on your device.

1. Log into your River account and click Open New Account.

2. Select to open a Hardware Wallet account.

3. Select Trezor and click “Next”. You will be redirected to connect.trezor.io.

4. Once you are redirected to connect.trezor.io, please connect your Trezor hardware wallet to your device. If this is the first time you are using Trezor on your device, you will be prompted to download Trezor Bridge.

5. Check “Don’t ask me again” and click “Allow once for the session” to begin signing a message using your Trezor.

6. Enter the PIN for your Trezor and click “Confirm”.

7. You will be asked to confirm this signature on your Trezor device. Please accept the request for the signature.

8. Once you have signed the message, you will be redirected back to River. Please click “Continue” to accept the requests with your Trezor. You will then be redirected back to connect.trezor.io to export your public key.

9. Click “Export”.

10. Once you have successfully exported your public key, name your Account and click “Next”.

11. Congratulations, you have successfully connected your Trezor Hardware Wallet to River! You can click “Done” to go back to the River web application.
